Sep 23, Justin rated it it was ok.
The story isn’t as tight as its predecessor, loves the focus and isn’t quite clear where its story lies at first. I read the Monkey Wrench Gang years ago and enjoyed it.
Edward Abbey was a curmudgeon, a gnarled old man who says awful things about feminism and gives his woman characters ridiculously ditzy thought bubbles, but then allows them ass-kicking roles. Despite his efforts, his story lacks believability.
It also had some plot conflicts with the original. A valiant, brave effort, but not Abbey’s best. I can only take so many adjectives describing one of Hayduke’s hideouts or so many nouns to capture the word for an oil drilling machine.
I loved the Monkey Wrench Gang, so I had high hopes for this book. The two hundred pages prior are rambling arguments and stream-of-consciousness internal monologues, with randy characters meditating on other characters’ boobs on every other page. John rated it did not like it Sep 15, He makes me laugh – and makes me glad that there remain desperadoes lurking in the juniper bushes. Edward Paul Abbey — was an American author and essayist noted for his advocacy edwarc environmental issues, criticism of public land policies, and anarchist political views.
I loved The Monkey Wrench Gangbut my expectations weren’t too high for this sequel. The obscene spectacle of Bishop Love and Goliath Love even eats a chunk of plutonium in a town meeting to prove that it’s safe helps Hayduke reunite the old gang for one last fling. His love for nature and extreme distrust of the industrial world influenced much of his work and helped garner a cult following. In case you thought that Hayduke the sexist was just a minor character, Abbey has returned to make him the hero.
There is a reason why Edward Abbey’s books are considered classics. Contact Contact Us Help. I’ve only ever “given up” on a book 5 or 6 times in my life, and this was one of them.
Refresh and try again. Seems unfinished, not in a ‘cliff-hanger, wait for book three’ way. Still, I liked it. Kind of a corresponding book might be Ecotopia Rising by Ernest Callenbach. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account.
Does this book offer anything that the first one didn’t? I’m putting it down now to pick up a classic that I hope will purge this lousy book from my mind.
I found it a bit “sexist” as well in it’s obsession with Erika, the buxom blonde Earth First! The protagonist, George Hayduke, who can’t talk or think without swearing, comes off as the most hypocritical personality of the bunch. A valiant, brave effort, but not Abbey’s best. I really enjoyed Monkey Wrench Gangbut this book just didn’t have nearly the same impact. It was funny once.
